Echo and Narcissus

url

The story of Echo and Narcissus comes from Greek mythology. In the story Echo is a nymph that falls in love with the ever amazing Narcissus. Narcissus is the object of the affection of many but does not love anyone back. Echo is cursed and can not say any words other than what is spoken to her after helping Juno’s husband get away. One day Echo tried to pursue Narcissus but he shunned her. The Gods got tired of Narcissus getting all of this affection and him blowing off everyone so they cursed him with falling love with someone that would never be able to love him back. This was his own reflection. When he saw his reflection in the stream he was mesmerized and thought that when he was trying to show affection it was doing the same. He never left the sight of his loved one and grew weak as the nymphs tried to lure him away, but to no avail. And where he died a single flower grew.

I can’t think of any Narcissists that I abhor but that could be because the first one that comes to mind is Barney from “How I Met Your Mother”. Obviously no one can truly dislike Barney even though he has selfish motives behind pretty much everything he does. But I also can’t think of an Altruist that I don’t admire being able to do everything so selflessly.
