Abraham and Isaac

God blessed Abraham and gave him riches in cattle and gold, so Abraham obeyed god. God decided to try Abraham and see if he really love him above all else. God told Abraham to journey to Mount Moriah where Abraham was to then build an altar and sacrifice Isaac (his son). Although Abraham was a little puzzled by this request, he knew he needed to obey god since god had given him so much. So, they made the trip to the mountain and Abraham prepared to kill his son. God stopped him and then Abraham saw a ram and he sacrificed it to God. Abraham is a representation of God in this story.

Sacrifice, in the biblical sense, is offering something to God to show respect (food, sons, animals etc.) Sacrifice in modern terms is a loss or something you give up, usually for the sake of a better cause. I think that all sacrifice is considered true sacrifice. Regardless if your sacrificing your only son to God or the last cookie in the cookie jar to your little sister, its still sacrifice. Since sacrifice is no longer used only in religious terms, I think anything you give up for a better cause is considered sacrifice.
